Hempty Plates is born out of a passion for fancy food without compromising on ethics. In a restaurant culture which en masse leaves their only vegan option as an afterthought, we are bringing epic plant-based cuisine to the absolute fore-front. Making no wild claims about animal ethics, no exclusive labeling, no clique culture, just sumptuous, rich and inspiring cuisine for any lover of fine food to enjoy. Inclusive dining at its best.
As those who are trying to live a low impact lifestyle know, no “ethical” choice is made without some form of compromise. Our goal is to be an exception to that rule. With most plant-based diets, ingredients have often traveled many miles to arrive upon the plate. Many “Vegan” foods whilst containing no animal products are often laden with additives and substitutes, agents and preservatives, ‘natural flavourings’ and stabilisers. At Hempty Plates we like to use only ingredients that you’d want to eat, nothing added, nothing with a chemical name, and nothing that doesn’t come from a plant! Change from the ground up! And local ground at that!
We strive to use all organic ingredients. We buy all of our fresh produce from local business, and write seasonal menu's to include produce with the least possible airmiles, and thus bursting with that freshly picked flavour, coulour and nutrient! There might even be the odd garnish from chef's own allotment! Hempty Plates was inspired by the lovely guys at Hempen, who grow, process and sell hemp around the UK. You might even catch them at one of our events!
Be The Change...
We are committed to doing the things right, no compromise. For us that means sourcing our food responsibly… using fresh, seasonal produce, sourced locally, supporting local businesses, and where additional luxuries are being supplemented, making sure they are not compromising our high-standard of ethics.
We use biodegradable cleaning products, recycle all possible waste, compost our peelings, and because of the set-menu pop-up format, we can keep food waste to an absolute minimum.
Nobody’s perfect. We still have a long way to go, but we are striving for that perfection. We donate £100 from each event to the World Land Trust that is actively spending the money on buying and protecting natural habitats acre-by-acre and educating people in protecting it for future generations.
The restaurant setting; the ambience, is incredibly important for us. Our venues are lushly decorated with beautiful foraged foliage and growing plants galore. In a natural setting, you are at your most relaxed. In this naturally relaxed state you are most capable of engaging with your senses, thus really getting that escapism from the city hubbub, and truly enjoying the tastes, textures, colours and smells that emanate from our kitchen. That’s the idea, anyway!
In a land where most of our plant-based complex proteins travel many a mile to land upon our plates, hemp, being locally grown and harvested, is just around the corner. Containing the perfect balance of Omega Oils, and a seemingly endless list of practical, sustainable and medicinal uses, Hemp is more than just mere food for thought. Our pop-up events offer an opportunity to try this local superfood prepared in a variety of enticing forms, to inspire and delight. We decorate our venue's with hemp art, print menu's on hemp paper, our napkins are made from hemp and we have hemp tablecloths. Hemp is a plant that has co-evolved with humans and offers a more sustainable alternative to so many existing products upon which we depend. From paper to concrete, from cotton to medicine, from food to paint, from skin care to hair care... hemp is a natural, sustainable alternative to synthetic, heavily processed products and also gives back to the soil in which it grows.
